Swing VR - The Dream of Flying

»imPOSSIBLE? The magic of wishes« special exhibition

On a swing you are free, and with every swing you get a little closer to the sky. When you can’t swing any higher, you close your eyes, and then, for a small moment, you feel utterly weightless – as if you can fly.

In the virtual reality-based art installation »SWING VR – The Dream of Flying« by A.MUSE – Interactive Design Studio, you don’t even have to close your eyes to enjoy the feeling of being able to fly. On the contrary: dive into this dream world with your eyes wide open.

02 Swing VR c A MUSE

VR-installation

The founders of A.MUSE, Binh Minh Herbst and Christin Marczinzik, have created a VR installation that allows you to fly. The installation is one of the exhibits in the »imPOSSIBLE? The magic of wishes« exhibition at GRIMMWELT in Kassel from 24 November 2022 to 11 June 2023.

Sit on a swing equipped with a VR headset and take flight – enjoy new perspectives and immerse yourself in virtual landscapes. Go higher and higher with each swing to hover over a city and colourful trees made of papier-mâché, painted in watercolour and then created analogue in 3D in the artists’ studio.

The higher you swing, the higher you’ll fly, past a colourful hot air balloon and up into the clouds, continuing to rise weightlessly into space. After about three minutes in this dream world, you’ll slowly return to earth again for a gentle touch down in the virtual city.

If you’re not able to go onto the swing and try out the VR headset, you’ll still be able to experience the journey into the dream world. The exhibition also has a film for visitors who, for health reasons, prefer to keep both feet on solid ground, making the dream accessible to everyone visiting the special exhibition – you won’t even need to close your eyes to enjoy the experience.

The installation is accessible to visitors aged 8 years or older with a minimum height of 120 centimetres.
(Please note further safety instructions in the exhibition itself.)

The Swing VR project has been awarded with the following prizes

Newcomer Award for New Media 2015: third place
ADC Newcomer Award 2016: bronze
