Info

This overview tour through the special exhibition “Light-Pictures. The paper worlds of Alexej Tchernyi” provides an insight into the artist's creative process.

You will learn how paper is turned into artfully constructed portraits and landscapes and how the artist stages these individual components to create detailed and multi-layered dioramas. Tchernyi's works have been on display in the permanent exhibition at GRIMMWELT since 2015 and re-enact scenes from the history of the “German Dictionary” using cinematic and dramaturgical means.

While paper was an important medium for the Brothers Grimm in their work and research into the German language and culture, Alexej Tchernyi turns the material itself into an object of research and is at the center of his artistic practice. He scoops, carves and backlights paper, and in the process of working with it he moves far away from its original state. In addition to a gallery of relief sculptures made of paper and light, the special exhibition will provide insights into the cinematic work of the artist, who, in addition to his work with paper, is also active as an animated film producer and uses techniques similar to those used in the creation of his dioramas.

Five dioramas dedicated to the theme of fairy tales have been created especially for this exhibition. Find out which contributors handed down the fairy tales to the Grimms and be impressed by the wealth of detail in the paper artwork.
